There is something beautiful about learning to notice your own life.
Not just the woohoo moments, but the ugh ones too. The first warm sip of coffee. Clean sheets. Birds chirping outside the window. Someone checking in on you. The smell of rain. Sunlight moving across the floor. Something new growing in the garden. A meal made from what you had. A laugh you weren’t expecting.
I think we can become so familiar with our own lives that we stop seeing some of the loveliness in them. We notice what needs doing, what we haven’t finished, what we wish was different and what we’re waiting for. Meanwhile, there can be so much goodness sitting quietly in the background.
Gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is wonderful. Some days are hard and some seasons feel heavy. There can be grief, worry, anger and disappointment sitting right alongside the beautiful things. Both can be true.
Maybe gratitude is allowing ourselves to notice the little things – A hot shower. A message from someone you love. Fresh washing on the line. The moon through the clouds. A favourite song coming on at exactly the right moment. Our breathe. Someone making you laugh.
I’m beginning to see gratitude less as something we have to do and more as a way of paying attention. A way of catching the magic.
Because some of the things we barely notice today might one day be the things we miss most. The noisy house when everyone was home. The old dog asleep nearby. The familiar drive home. Someone’s hands. The garden at a certain time of year. An afternoon that didn’t seem particularly important at the time.
This life is happening now. Not when everything is sorted. Not when we have more money, more time, a better house or a clearer plan. Now.
So maybe at the end of the day, think of 3 little things that felt good. Doesn’t have to be profound or forced. Just 3 moments you’re glad you got to have.
And tomorrow, notice a few more.
There is so much beauty hiding inside our life. Sometimes we just have to remember to look.
